Chapter Leader: Darlene Cook “During a routine pap screening in January 2014, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Then in September 2015, I was diagnosed with a reccurrence. During my battle with cervical cancer, I had no one to turn to that had battled this disease. I want to make sure I am visible to the Dallas community in the event someone needs to talk. “The reason I started a Dallas Chapter of NCCC is to raise awareness about this disease and educate the community about this preventable cancer. In addition to educating the community about cervical cancer and HPV, my goal is to help eliminate the same pain, suffering my family, friends, and I went through. “Most individuals in our communities don’t know the risk from cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the only cancer we can wipe out in our lifetime. Last year in the United States, nearly 13,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 4,000 women died. These diagnoses and deaths are due to lack of screenings and education. “The mission of the NCCC is to educate about cervical cancer screening: Pap and HPV Tests, HPV vaccines for girls and boys, and other HPV-related cancers which effect men.
